L'appropriation de l'espace. Un concept à la recherche d'une définition opérationnelle.

Abstract
L'espace comme le temps, est une dimension fondamentale de la philosophie et de l'existence dont la psychologie de l'environnement a fait un parametre central depuis les debuts de l'etude des transactions entre l'homme et l'environnement construit. Malgre des progres notables dans la definition de l'appropriation de l'espace depuis 1976 (Korosec-Serfaty et al), ce concept en particulier, frequemment utilise dans differents contextes de recherche, ne possede toujours pas de definition operationnelle. L'objectif des auteurs de cet article consiste precisement a tenter de remedier a cet etat de choses. Une echelle d'appropriation de l'espace (Morval et al 1997) a ete elaboree a partir de la litterature et testee sur un echantillon de 228 etudiants universitaires des HEC a Montreal qui venaient de demenager dans un edifice nouveau. Les donnees ont ete traitees par analyses factorielles et permettent de degager trois composantes significatives du concept etudie: le degre de connaissance de l'environnement immediat, la libre circulation dans l'edifice et la stimulation de l'environnement. Une hypothese est avancee quant aux liens entre ces dimensions. Cette recherche est la premiere etape d'un projet plus large qui devrait donner lieu a des publications ulterieures.
