L'A. explore le cadre, l'histoire, les caracteristiques, les implications et autres perspectives de la liberte de recherche et d'expression, telle que presentee dans les deux Codes. La premiere partie presente un cadre historique et doctrinal, ainsi que le developpement historique de la liberte d'enquete et d'expression tel que propose par le canon 218 du Code de Droit canonique et le canon 21 du Code des canons des Eglises orientales. La deuxieme partie analyse les caracteristiques des sujets de la liberte, les experts en disciplines sacrees, l'objet de la liberte, la juste liberte d'enquete et d'expression et la limite principale de la liberte, l'obsequium au magistere. La troisieme partie met l'accent sur le rapport entre le magistere et le theologien, qui est manifeste concretement dans les diverses procedures juridiques: mandat d'enseigner, profession de foi et serment de fidelite, les criteres pour utiliser les moyens de communication sociale et l'examen doctrinal par la Congregation pour la Doctrine de la Foi. La derniere partie presente les « nouveaux horizons » que la liberte d'enquete et d'expression ouvre. L'A. conclut que la liberte de recherche et d'expression doit etre appliquee a tous les fideles.
