Abstract
Guomundur Finnbogason's anthology Vestem um hafy published as a gesture of friendship to American-Icelandic visitors at the millennial celebration of the Aljpingi in 1930. Although the book has done much to attract attention to Western Icelandic literature, the editors' selection is somewhat unfortunate, because it gives the mistaken impression that among firstand second-generation Icelandic immigrants in Canada and the United States writing was almost exclusively a male venture. Of the thirty-six writers included in Vestan um hafy only three are women: Jakobina Johnson (1883-1977), Guorun H. Finnsdottir (1884-1946), and Laura Goodman Salverson (1890-1970). Stefan Einarsson (1948: 233-255) in his survey of Western Icelandic prose writers adds to these three Rannveig K. G. Sigbjornsson (1880-1963) and Arnrun fra Felli (pen-name of Guorun Tomasdottir; 1886-1963) and makes brief mention of Torfhildur Eorsteinsdottir Holm (1845-1918) and Holmfriour G. C. Sharpe (1858-1898), while Richard Beck (1950: 199-242) in a similar survey of Western Icelandic poets, includes discussion of only Jakobina Johnson and Laura Goodman Salverson and briefly mentions Undina (pen-name of Helga Steinvor Baldvinsdottir; 1858-1941) and Helen Swinburne Lloyd (1892-1979).
