La conservation et la gestion du patrimoine issu du mouvement moderne en Afrique subsaharienne reste encore une question dont les contours n’ont pas été suffisamment analysés. D’où les difficultés existantes de nos jours pour son acceptation et sa compréhension par les professionnels et les populations de cette région d’Afrique. Les rares analyses des réalisations encore visibles en région subsaharienne montrent que le contexte colonial en Afrique subsaharienne a été très favorable au développement de l’école de pensée du mouvement moderne. Les expérimentations qui y ont été menées ont contribué au développement de connaissances technologiques et architecturales. Cette contribution voudrait tout d’abord apporter un éclairage sur ce qui pourrait être considéré comme la “ lecture africaine ” du patrimoine issu du mouvement moderne, dans le but de soutenir la démarche visant à examiner le “ modernisme hors de l’Occident ” dans toutes les régions du monde. Elle voudrait également montrer l’importance d’assurer la préservation des derniers témoins visibles, en ne se fondant pas uniquement sur la grille d’analyse du mouvement moderne, mais aussi sur une compréhension de leur signification culturelle en tant que fruit d’un métissage culturel et non comme empreinte d’une tradition architecturale européenne en territoire africain.
