Cet article fait référence à un événement de l’histoire contemporaine, lourd de conséquences politiques : la première visite du pape Jean-Paul II en Pologne, en 1979. Tous les textes des homélies du pape ont été disponibles, sous forme écrite, ainsi que leurs traductions, dans les centres de presse, pour les besoins des journalistes. Mais comme ces textes ont été soumis aux autorités avant la visite, il est clair que le pape lui-même a dû censurer plusieurs de ses textes, puisqu’il lui était impossible de dire ouvertement ce qu’il voulait. Ainsi, une des caractéristiques de son style consistait à intégrer beaucoup de sous-entendus, d’implicites, de non-dits ou d’allusions, clairs pour les récepteurs indigènes mais restant obscurs pour les récepteurs étrangers. Ayant travaillé en tant qu’interprète pendant cet événement avec les journalistes duFigaro,l’auteure de cet article dispose de ce matériel inédit. En s’appuyant sur une trentaine de textes présentés par le pape, l’auteure a essayé de décrire certains traits caractéristiques des textes censurés, ainsi que les opérations linguistiques effectuées, pendant leur traduction, pour permettre aux récepteurs étrangers d’accéder au sens caché de ces textes.
