Selon Chesterman (2009), les études du traducteur (translator studies) constituent un nouveau domaine des études de traduction ou traductologie : longtemps laissée pour compte, la figure du traducteur appréhendée à travers son rôle historique, ses attitudes, ses actions et ses interactions avec son environnement social et technique appelle en effet une mise en perspective théorique et analytique. Cette contribution vise à établir un état des lieux des principales tendances en prenant la forme d’une double spirale. La première est théorique ; elle va du général au particulier en proposant trois directions : la première se centre sur la place occupée par le traducteur au sein du dispositif discursif ; la deuxième identifie les traits majeurs du concept de traducteur : figure biographique, instance institutionnelle, instance textuelle ; la troisième s’attache à l’énonciation traductive. La seconde spirale est historique : elle présente le dossier du traducteur belge Octave Delepierre (1802-1879) : ses nombreuses traductions en différents genres et à partir de plusieurs langues. Elle rapporte ensuite les traductions de Delepierre au large éventail d’activités de médiation qu’il entreprend en Belgique et entre l’Angleterre et le continent. Les deux spirales invitent à la poursuite du dialogue entre les études théoriques et les études historiques au sein d’une conception plus souple du traducteur-médiateur.
