During the past 2 years, the North America Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), in partnership with its fund-raising and research sister organization, the Children's Digestive Health and Nutrition Foundation (CDHNF), has been engaged in developing a research agenda. Members of NASPGHAN developed this document to promote and support research priorities in the discipline. This intense process was the result of a collaborative effort by more than 50 members of the society who have specific areas of expertise and interest. The document was developed to highlight current gaps in knowledge and to point the direction for future advances in the subspecialty. Rather than being all inclusive, the research agenda is intended for use as a springboard for discussions among a variety of partners in government, industry, and disease-related agencies. The plan is to raise funds to support research activities related to advancing knowledge in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and clinical nutrition. The research agenda also is intended to highlight the need to support excellence in training those who will form the next generation of investigators in the field. The research agenda includes sections on the molecular basis of gastrointestinal diseases, developmental physiology and pathophysiology, secretion and diarrhea, acid-peptic diseases, endoscopy, cystic fibrosis and pancreatic diseases, motility disorders and functional gastrointestinal disorders, hepatobiliary disorders, transplantation, nutrition and obesity, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and allergy and immunology. The research agenda was presented for consideration at a meeting of the Digestive Disease Interagency Coordinating Committee held on December 11, 2001, at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The research agenda also has been presented to leaders in the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. There is considerable interest in using this agenda to develop a new initiative to engage Canadian and American investigators in collaborative research initiatives, which will be supported by intergovernmental agencies. Such an initiative could be used, for example, to support the training of U.S. citizens at centers of excellence in Canada and vice versa. We plan to publish the complete NASPGHAN-CDHNF research agenda as a supplement to the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition later this year. We hope that this task will meet its goals by enhancing research funding to provide advances in knowledge and thereby promote the digestive health of children.
