« Tu m’as construit » : altérité et identité dans la traduction d’Icelander

Henri Meschonnic définit le traduire comme « un mode de relation entre une identité et une altérité », et va même jusqu’à affirmer que « l’identité n’advient que par l’altérité ». Sans l’autre, pas de soi. Ainsi, l’œuvre d’origine dépend du traducteur pour se construire dans une autre langue, et le traducteur doit négocier entre son propre univers (langagier, culturel, personnel) et celui de l’auteur d’origine. Dans Icelander (2006) de l’auteur américain Dustin Long, roman intertextuel et faussement policier rappelant ceux de Thomas Pynchon et Jasper Fforde, le personnage de Prescott lance à l’héroïne : « Tu m’as construit. » Cette affirmation pourrait être prononcée par les nombreux autres personnages qui peuplent le récit et dont l’identité semble dépendre de façon vitale d’autrui ; c’est notamment le cas de l’héroïne qui tente de se construire au milieu de ces autres si dominants. Comment se positionner face à l’altérité du monde (Antoine Berman), à l’altérité de l’œuvre d’origine ? Comment la faire parler dans l’œuvre traduite ? Le traducteur doit déconstruire les modes de relation entre identité et altérité mis en place par l’œuvre d’origine, afin de mieux les (re)construire dans l’œuvre traduite. Nous proposons d’analyser ces différents modes de relation entre identité et altérité présents dans l’œuvre d’origine, et les solutions françaises élaborées dans notre traduction parue aux éditions Asphalte (Icelander, 2011). Ceci nous permettra également de tracer un parallèle entre la façon dont les personnages construisent leur identité face à l’altérité, et la façon dont le traducteur construit l’identité de cette œuvre autre qu’est l’œuvre traduite.
