across a broad spectrum of disciplines targeting four crosscutting research themes: fundamental biomedical research; clinical and applied research; research directed toward advancing knowledge of health systems and health services; and research that addresses the social, cultural, and environmental factors that affect the health of populations.Curiosity driven research by individual scientists will continue to be an important component of CIHR programs.Additionally, there will be emphasis on the promotion of multidisciplinary and collaborative research, fostering of unique partnerships (such as with the voluntary health agencies, other government agencies, or industry), capacity building, and integration of CIHR programs with Canada's health care system.The CIHR leadership structure includes the President, Dr. Alan Bernstein, and a Governing Council of 18 members from diverse backgrounds representing the crosscutting themes for health research.The Governing Council first established the suite of institutes and their general mandates.It will be responsible for setting the overall strategic directions, goals, and policies for CIHR as well as establishing the need and functions of offices (such as for ethics or international health) and special advisory committees established under CIHR.On July 25, 2000, Minister Rock and Dr. Bernstein announced the designation of 13 institutes that will comprise CIHR: Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes ( including gastroenterology, hepatology and pancreatology); Human Development and Child and Youth Health; Population and Public Health; Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis; Neurosciences, Mental Health, and Addiction; Infection and Immunity; Healthy Aging; Genetics; Gender and Health; Cancer Research; Circulatory and Respiratory Health; and Aboriginal Peoples' Health.Although there are some similarities between the new CIHR and the NIH model in the United States, the institutes within CIHR will be "virtual."The responsibility of each institute is to
