Abstract
Cet article porte un regard rétrospectif sur cinquante ans de multiculturalisme au Canada. Il s‘agit d’un rappel de la mise en place du multiculturalisme au Canada sur les cinq décennies, pour observer la manière dont les principes directeurs posés en 1971 ont progressivement été entérinés dans la loi, au point de devenir aujourd’hui un élément essentiel de l’identité canadienne pour les Canadiens. Dans un deuxième temps, l’article s’intéresse à l’adhésion des Canadiens, à la fois des citoyens récemment immigrés ou des citoyens dits de souche, au multiculturalisme, qui semble régulièrement plébiscité dans les enquêtes nationales. À cet effet, nous étudions une enquête publiée en 2022, réalisée à la suite du recensement de 2021 qui révélait une nouvelle répartition dans la population canadienne. Pour terminer ces quelques réflexions sur cinquante ans de multiculturalisme au Canada, nous regardons vers l’avenir en nous interrogeant sur la montée des discours racisés au Canada, et sur la place des Autochtones dans ce projet multiculturaliste.
