Alignment of Big Ideas, Achievement Standards, and Questions in Ontario, B.C., and Singapore Curricula for Conceptual Understanding

Abstract
[Purpose] This study aimed to compare and analyze how big ideas and questions were presented in alignment with achievement standards in foreign curricula to foster conceptual understanding. By doing so, the study sought to provide insights into the structure and linkage of content systems and achievement standards in the Korean curriculum. [Methods] This study examined primary social studies curriculum documents from Ontario and British Columbia in Canada, as well as Singapore, focusing on the presentation of big ideas and questions. A document analysis was conducted to compare and analyze the ways in which big ideas, achievement standards, and questions were linked in these three curricula. [Results] First, all three curricula presented a limited number of big ideas per grade level, with big ideas articulated differently across grades. Second, the linkage between big ideas and achievement standards varied, taking either a one-to-one or many-to-many correspondence, but in both cases, the elements could be easily connected directly or indirectly. Third, questions were presented in direct or indirect relation to both big ideas and achievement standards. Fourth, while the methods of linking big ideas, achievement standards, and questions differed, these elements were collectively presented in a single table for each grade, allowing for their direct and indirect integration. Consequently, these curricula supported curriculum design and implementation by using questions as a central tool to deepen the understanding of big ideas and to facilitate the attainment of achievement standards within the context of these big ideas. [Conclusion] Based on these findings, the study provided implications for improving the structure and linkage presentation of content organization and achievement standards in the Korean curriculum.
