Si la nouvelle est un genre très largement traduit, il existe peu de travaux sur ses spécificités d’un point de vue traductologique. Cet article, qui s’appuie sur mon expérience de traduction de cinq formes courtes de Virginia Woolf, s’efforce de poser les premiers jalons d’une réflexion plus large sur la traduction de la nouvelle. J’invite à penser la traduction de ce genre au prisme de la retraduction, conçue non plus comme substitution, mais comme coexistence. Cette « traduction-kaléidoscope » de la forme courte que j’encourage sur le plan éditorial permettrait d’en révéler les différents versants au lecteur cible. En reconstituant telle une mosaïque, ou un patchwork, l’oeuvre source, ce jeu de miroir révèle dans la langue cible les multiples lectures permises par le défi herméneutique que la nouvelle woolfienne pose au lecteur source. De la même façon que la brièveté de la forme invite à la relecture, je montre que la traduction de la forme courte gagne à être pensée dans la multiplicité de la retraduction, afin de mener à une production chorale du texte. Après avoir retracé l’histoire éditoriale des nouvelles de Woolf en France, j’aborde, en comparant des retraductions de quatre formes courtes de Virginia Woolf, quelques enjeux de traduction particulièrement exacerbés dans le cas de la nouvelle woolfienne : le titre, la minutie lexicale, l’ambiguïté sémantique et grammaticale, et les temps.
