Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

* * * This master's thesis addresses the challenges associated with the translation of joual, framing these challenges within a broader investigation into the representation of Quebecois popular orality (QPO) in a corpus of novels by Michel Tremblay. The linguistic analysis carried out on this corpus serves as a preliminary step toward the translation proposal of Bonbons Assortis, an autobiographical novel by the aforementioned author, published in 2002 by Leméac Éditeur, from Quebecois French into Italian. The study explores these topics across three sections. The first section outlines the graphic and stylistic processes used to represent orality in writing and subsequently provides an overview of linguistic variation in Quebec. The second section examines how Tremblay employs mimetic writing and trucages orthographiques to depict joual in his theatrical and narrative works. This section also includes a corpus-based analysis of 17 of his novels, including Bonbons Assortis. Finally, the third section presents the proposed translation of this novel, supported by a linguistic and translation-oriented commentary that includes a study on the source text and the translation strategies employed, as well as the methodological considerations that informed the entire translation process.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
