Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The article offers a history of the French versions of the works of the priest-professor Dumitru Stăniloae, recently canonised by the Romanian Orthodox Church, and considered to be the greatest Romanian theologian of all time, as well as one of the most important contemporary Orthodox theologians in general. The article examines the nature of these translations, the profile of the translators, their link (usually spiritual) with the person or teaching of the Romanian theologian, their purpose and their impact on Orthodoxy and Christianity in France in particular and in the West in general. We show that the French translations of Father Dumitru Stăniloae's books were made with the aim of popularising his theological thought in the Western space of French culture and other French-speaking cultures (Swiss, Belgian, Canadian, etc.). We are referring to the French translations published before the fall of communism in Romania and to their translators, to the versions published after 2010 in particular, and to the publication of the French translations of the texts of the Philocalia, accompanied by the introduction and exegetical commentaries of Father Dumitru Stăniloae. This paratraductive initiative, as well as the paratraductive approach as a whole (Yuste Frías 2010), highlights the French editors' awareness of the indisputable value of Father Stăniloae's contribution to the foundations of a philocalic tradition that is Romanian in expression, but universal in value. We also show that the translators of the writings of Father Saint Dumitru Stăniloae have devoted a great deal of work and energy to their respective translation projects, conscious of the fundamental challenge of their endeavours to make known in French the theological and spiritual thought of the greatest Romanian theologian of all time. The aim of these endeavours has therefore been both spiritual-doctrinaire and cultural-cultural (to showcase the Romanian component of French-speaking Orthodoxy, which is increasingly visible in France), with a complex and obvious impact on Orthodoxy and Christianity in France in particular and in the West in general.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
